Nokia has launched a series of web services under the brand name 'Ovi' that allows users to download games, maps and music directly to their cellphones.
Nokia's new Music Store, which is in direct competition with Apple's iTunes offering, makes it a large step forward in accessibility. Compared to Apple's iTunes which is less expensive and allows users to download songs directly to their computers, Nokia's Ovi users can download songs directly to their phones.
Nokia has struck deals with the world's biggest music labels Universal Music, Warner Music Group, EMI, Sony BMG and gamemakers Electronic Arts and Game Loft for its game store, N-Gage.
The first Nseries handset with the capability to access Ovi will be the the 8GB memory equipped N81. The device has been slightly optimized for gaming and it comes with a navi-scroller that is touch sensitive, similar to an iPod scroll wheel.

India second-largest market for Nokia
India has now become the second-largest market for Nokia in terms of sales, ahead of the US. Over the past three years, India has been gaining significant ground year-on-year, moving from the 4th position in 2005 to third in 2006, and it is today poised right behind China.
Making this announcement, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, the president and CEO of Nokia Corporation, who was in New Delhi today, said, “India is playing an increasingly important role in the global economy buoyed by impressive economic growth, skilled manpower and tremendous business opportunity. Today, India hosts a comprehensive Nokia R&D, manufacturing and design presence. Moreover, we are also the country’s leading provider of wireless infrastructure through Nokia Siemens Networks, the newly-merged entity. This not only reiterates our commitment and belief in the market but also underscores India’s emergence as a strategic resource hub for Nokia globally.”
The company also announced that half of the handsets manufactured at its plant in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, was being exported to 58 countries across Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
The company currently employs over 9,000 people and has 95,000 outlets with 50,000 exclusive Nokia brand stores. The Sriperumbudur manufacturing plant alone employs 4,700 people, 70 per cent of them women.
Moreover, Nokia Telecom Park, which received an investment of $500 million (Rs 2,043 crore) from the company and seven global component manufacturers, is likely to generate over 30,000 jobs when fully functional.
Buoyed by the growth of the Indian economy and the telecommunications segment, the company sees the country as a focused market.
The prompt ‘product advisory’ issued recently (the company does not call it a recall) for the BL-5C battery manufactured by Matsushita Battery Industrial, indicates how sensitive it is about its reputation. The feedback that the company received post its advisory also reiterates its position in India. On the very first day (August 16) of the opening of its centre for advice on the faulty batteries, Nokia India answered 20,000 calls and received 1.45 lakh SMSes.

Nokia N95 voted European media phone of the year
Mobile phone manufacturer Nokia's N95 multimedia phone has been voted 'the European Media Phone of the Year 2007-2008' by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA).
EISA praised the Nokia N95 as containing practically every feature one could imagine in a mobile device. Additionally the award citation of the EISA jury goes on to say, "It's no mere mobile phone and no mere status symbol. Pick up a Nokia N95 and you hold in your hands a state-of-the-art communication tool - the ideal way to remain permanently in touch and on track with the world that surrounds you."
The judging panel cited Nokia N95 features such as GPS, 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and MPEG4 video capture of upto 30 fps. EISA also highlighted the device's data access of up to 3.5MB/s, advanced web browser, Wi-Fi, microSD slot and audio reproduction of multiple audio formats.

Sunil Dutt no longer with Nokia
Sunil Dutt, director, sales, Nokia, has served his notice period at the company after putting in his papers, and is now all set to start a retail chain. The development came to light after Dutt was offered charge of Nokia Indonesia. He refused the foreign posting and instead chose to start afresh.
Sources inform agencyfaqs! that Bob McDougall, the managing director of Nokia Thailand, will replace Dutt.
Sunil Dutt
Says Dutt, “I have made a choice to start a telecom retail chain in partnership with friends. The new brand will be rolled out in a month or so.”
Dutt seems to be treading the path taken by counterparts such as Romy Juneja, who quit Motorola to set up his telecom retail chain, MobileNXT. Dutt, however, says his product and brand are entirely different from MobileNXT.
Says Dutt, “Retail is an exciting space and my brand will soon be launched. It needs to be promoted and we have a considerable advertising budget in place as well.”
In fact, Dutt’s mobile retail venture will face competition from other operators such as Hotspot, The Mobile Store (owned by Essar), Mobile Magic and Subhiksha Retail (they also sell mobile phones and accessories).

Nokia opens design studio in Bangalore
Nokia has set up a design studio in partnership with Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore. The studio will explore a range of design trends and themes including colour and material trends in India, mobile use of the Internet and its implications for design, and examining innovative features and uses for mobiles. It will be run by a team of Nokia designers along with students at Srishti School and established designers across India.
“For Nokia, design is not just about the look and feel of the handsets but equally important is what it can do for people and how it fits into their lives. Designers must be exposed to how people live and work in different places around the world. Our new satellite studio in India will draw on the experiences of this dynamic market to develop new design ideas and identify trends," said Mr Hannu Nieminen, Head of Insight and Innovation, Nokia Design, in a statement said.
“Nokia’s decision to open its first design satellite studio in India underscores our commitment to the market and strengthens our presence in the country– distribution and sales, R&D, manufacturing and now design. Our vision for India is to connect the next billion and our design and R&D centres will be instrumental in giving us insights to cater to the needs of this market,” said Mr D Shivakumar, Vice-President and Country General Manager, Nokia India.
Ms. Geetha Narayanan, Founder and Director, Srishti, said: “Exposure to world class designers in one of the fastest growing product category in the world will be a huge opportunity for the students in India.”
The Bangalore satellite studio is part of Nokia’s ongoing investment in design. This year the company established a new design studio at its global headquarters in Espoo, Finland and plans to open a similar facility in London later this year. Globally, it has hired 50 more designers in the last year. Nokia has more than 300 designers in its global team from 34 countries.

Nokia launches N77 with mobile TV features
Nokia today introduced the Nokia N77 multimedia device, a feature rich addition to its existing DVB-H Mobile TV portfolio which offers an optimized mobile TV experience alongwith complete Nokia Nseries functionalities.
Users of this device in New Delhi will be able to view Doordarshan's recently launched DVB-H Mobile TV service currently comprising 8 free-to-air Doordarshan channels including DD News, DD National and DD Sports. This will give TV enthusiasts the opportunity to watch live cricket, serials, movies, news and music anywhere, anytime.
Nokia India director multimedia Vineet Taneja said, "With the growing popularity of mobile devices and its capability to offer instant access to information and entertainment, the launch of the N77 complements our existing N92 device and offers more choices to our customers. This also redefines the television viewing experience in a compact and optimized new package irrespective of time and destination."
"The wide 2.4" flat screen with up to 16 million colors and high quality stereo sound makes it the ideal personal mobile device for enjoying live TV and music on the move," he further added.
The device has the capability to remember the last channel a person was viewing before switching it off. It allows users to set reminders for a particular program and have alerts for the show timings, just at the push of a button.
Through the programme guide in the mobile TV application, users can also view program information up to seven days, browse TV channels and select the TV program they are interested in viewing. Some of the other features include 30-second replay and live TV watching after replay.
It has built-in interactive service functionality, like SMS voting for deciding what music video will be played next. It has 2GB of memory that can store upto 1500 tracks. It also has integrated stereo speakers and users can connect the N77 with compatible headphone set.
