International film festival opens in Romania

The week-long 4th International Festival of Independent Film opened on Monday in Sfantu Gheorghe in the Danube Delta of Eastern Romania with the screening of former U.S. Vice President Al Gore's documentary on global warming "An Inconvenient Truth".

Presented at the festival will be nine full-length films, 36 short-reel films and 18 movies addressing the theme of global warming, the Rompres news agency reported on Monday.

The movies selected for this year's edition will be grouped in three sections -- full-length films, short-reel fiction and short-reel animation films -- as well as movies outside the competition.

The screenings were selected based on the following requirements: they have to be produced after January 1 2006, they must have English subtitles if necessary and their length should not exceed 20 minutes.

The prizes total 23,000 U.S. dollars, of which 10,000 dollars will be awarded to the winner of the trophy.
