The public broadcaster, which boasts of the largest DTH service in the country that beams into over five million homes, has set a deadline of August 15 for these five channels to pay up. After this, they will be blacked out.
The five channels are Headlines Today, TV9, Akash Bangla, Aaj Tak and Star Utsav. Sahara channel, which too was issued a notice, has expressed its "inability" to pay the amount. Under the rules, a domestic channel has to pay Rs 25 lakh a year as carriage fee while foreign channels have to pay Rs 50 lakh.
"We had given them sufficient time. It is time to decide if they can continue for free. We have to meet our operational expenses and earn too," Prasar Bharti CEO B S Lalli told media.
